The UK Transformed Into The World of Destiny

NewcastleNewcastle Spaceport
To mark the launch
of the new game Destiny out nowActivision, the team that brought us Call of Duty, and Bungie who are the creators of Halo, have worked with the National Space Centre to develop a sense of what the future of space travel could look like and how this could change some of the UKs cityscapes. This is based on real intel and plans that are already underway to realise space travel commercially, as well as the advances in the field that the NSC expects over the next 25 years which they have extrapolated.

These ‘Future Visions’ of how our cities might look during the upcoming golden age of space travel have been created with the advice of the National Space Centre and could closely resemble the transformation likely to take place in many countries which are already beginning to invest in framework to support the commercialisation of space travel. Plans for a UK spaceport for 2018 are strongly being investigated with eight locations already shortlisted.

Destiny is pushing boundaries in both gameplay development and artistic style. Many of the environments within the game are based on locations that already exist around the world such as the real-life Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan from which Sputnik 1, Earth’s first artificial satellite, was launched into space and was also the original site for the Russian Space program.

However, Destiny is set in an age where space travel is no longer a novel dream. Following a ‘Golden Age on Earth’, all that is left is a desolate wasteland and on the last city on Earth, players can explore our solar system and get a taste for solar exploration.

How close are these to what the UK could look like if space travel becomes a reality? It would be pretty cool if it’s anything like these. Follow @DestinyTheGame and @Bungie for info and updates.
