Telltale’s Guardians Of The Galaxy is based on the comics of the same name (rather than on the newly released sequel superhero movie, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2. We’re only one episode into a planned rollout of at least five, but so far things are adding up for this to be a very successful title. Let’s take a look at the factors surrounding its release, as well as the early reception to episode one.

Guardians Of The Galaxy is Growing in popularity

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 is killing it at the cinema, as is to be expected of most any Marvel film these days. Its success is a particular relief for some comic book movie fans given that comedy sequels have a fairly poor track record. As one review put it, sequels repeat the best tricks of their predecessors, but director James Gunn’s choice of tricks is way more fun that most. It might feel like a rehashing of what made the first film work, but it’s still a lot of fun.

The film surpassed $500 million at worldwide box offices not long after its first week of release, and could be on its way to double that over time. Now, the new Telltale game doesn’t specifically have to do with this film, but it stands to reason that success for one will help the other. Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 has kept the magic and fun of these characters alive and then some, and that will only get fans more excited about purchasing or the game.

This Starts Marvel’s New Gaming Venture

For most of the last five years or so, the bulk of Marvel’s gaming success has been outside of the console market. Look through mobile app stores and you’ll find several titles where Marvel has collaborated with developers to design RPGs, fighting games, and more. Take a look at an overview of slot gaming options at mainstream online casino sites, and you’ll find several Marvel-inspired reels. Marvel is lending its characters and settings to popular gaming styles in both of these formats, whether in a fairly standard RPG layout or on the same kind of slot reel that can work with any number of thematic backdrops.

Last year, Marvel announced that it was going to be making a push to put out more original and impressive console games—and Guardians Of The Galaxy by Telltale is the first title to come out for consoles since that announcement. That alone is probably giving the game a boost as well. Gamers were excited by Marvel’s intent to delve more seriously into the console market, and this game is a good sign that it’s going to be a successful venture.

Telltale Has Done More Of The Same

The reviews are up for “Tangled Up In Blue,” the title of the first episode, and if you read through them you’ll notice some similarities to typical positive reviews for Telltale games. People love this company for its ability to weave a story around popular characters. The experience of playing a Telltale title is more about making choices and playing out different outcomes than it is about actual action. Early on, critics and users alike seem pleased with the structure, scope, and direction of the narrative in “Tangled Up In Blue.”

With this latest offering, it’s clear that Telltale is up to its old tricks again, which should guarantee the success of the remaining episodes.
