OnePlus 8T Speeds Its Way Into The OnePlus 2020 Device Lineup

OnePlus 8T is the fourth OnePlus device in 2020 and it’s potentially the most tantalising yet.

In true OnePlus fashion, the brand has refused to settle on what was the most powerful OnePlus device to date in the OnePlus 8 Pro. Now they’ve found a way to create a trimmed down device that retains a number of the features we loved about the OP8 Pro.But coming in at a similar price to its closest stablemate, we can’t help but wonder: Where does that leave the OnePlus 8? Let’s take a look at the new device and see what’s good.

What’s new on the OnePlus 8T?

The OnePlus 8T’s headline spec is its 120Hz fluid AMOLED FHD+ 2.5D display. It’s a newly calibrated panel and has a Just Noticeable Colour Rating (JNCD) of 0.3 – closer to zero, the better. It also gets a boost with OnePlus’ fastest charging capability to date; Warp Charge 65. The new protocol is made possible by utilising a twin-battery charging configuration that allows its 4500 mAh capacity to make the most of 65W power. As stated by OnePlus, it should deliver a full charge in under 40 minutes. It’s available in two colours; Lunar Silver and Aquamarine Green. Both colours have a frosted glass finish that reduces finger prints.

The Aquamarine Green is your only choice if you want the top spec 12GB/256GB version mind. Both devices are running Oxygen OS11 layered over Android 11 though. It’s the cleanest and most pleasant iteration of Oxygen OS yet and possibly my favourite mainstream third party Android OS now.

OnePlus 8T Pros

  • Sleek Design
  • Super smooth 120Hz AMOLED Display
  • OxygenOS 11 / Android 11 OS
  • Warp Charge 65
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 5G

OnePlus 8T Cons

  • No Wireless Charging
  • Quad camera consistency varies

OnePlus 8T Verdict

If this was the only device released by OnePlus in 2020 it could be considered an unalloyed success. But it comes off the back of a year where they’ve released three devices between April and July, with potentially more devices to come before the end of the year.

The strategy seems clear; something for everybody. Which is now the case with the OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 Pro, OnePlus Nord and now the OnePlus 8T. The sticking point is that the OnePlus 8T’s brilliant, smooth 120Hz screen, updated camera, faster charging and sleeker body render the OnePlus 8, somewhat redundant. They are similar in size and shape (although the 8T is thinner and neither device has wireless charging. There’s little-to-no reason to buy the OnePlus 8 now, but there are plenty of reasons to buy the OnePlus 8T; it’s fast, it’s beautifully designed, has a larger, faster battery capability, it’s lovely to use and has a decent camera with steady video recording capabilities.
