Sony RX100 VI – what’s new?

Sony has mastered the principle: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” This is much the case with the new Sony RX100 VI. Having successfully dominated the premium pock camera segment for the past five years with the RX100 series, this latest model turns the screw on the competition further buy keeping many of the features of its predecessor – including its popular chassis – but adding an impressive Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 24-200mm F/2.8-4.5 lens.

The previous models have relied on a more standard focal range, settling mostly on 24-70mm. But this time, Sony has increased the zoom range of this camera, further enhancing its appeal to photographers interested in travel, wildlife and sports.

A 1-inch 20.1-megapixel Exmor RS Stacked CMOS sensor remains at the heart of the RX100 VI and will deliver a superb balance of detail, contrast and colour rendition if previous form is anything to go by. It can also record video in up to 4K-resolution with full pixel readout and up to 1000fps in Full HD for super-slow motion capture.

Armed with 315 phase detection autofocus areas and 25 contrast detection points fast, the Sony RX100 VI will be able to keep up with the action in most lighting conditions. This hybrid AF system tenaciously tracks moving subjects and locks on in a fraction of a second, 0.03 seconds to be precise, and it also benefits from Sony’s famed Eye AF.

Video blogger, content creators and selfie lovers will appreciate the ability to flip the RX100 VI’s 3-inch 921k-dot LCD screen up 180 degrees to face forwards. In addition, it can capture stills at up to 24 frames per second for a burst of up to 233 shots, which would be perfect for creating animated GIFs or freezing action sequences. The celebrated pop EVF of the RX100 VI gets an upgrade this time around, with the high-resolution XGA viewfinder full extending outwards automatically. Previously you had to pull it out once extended, so that’s a neat improvement.

Sony RX100 VI Price

In keeping with its class, the Sony RX100 VI won’t be cheap by any means, with the previous model scraping in just below the £1000 mark. However, for the features and flexibility, the RX100 VI will rival the capabilities of many DSLR cameras in a battle between portability, convenience and image quality. So with that said, we can expect to pay around £1,149.00 to get our hands on the Sony RX100 IV.
